Verifying the Claim of Adherence to the Salaf in the Interpretation of Divine Informative Attributes (Ṣifāt Khabarīyyah) A Case Study of the Wahhabi and Akhavānul Muslimīn Perspectives

Abstract:   (8 Views)
Informative attributes (ṣifāt khabarīyyah) constitute a significant portion of religious texts, and Muslims have expressed varying views regarding their interpretation. The Wahhabi movement, claiming adherence to the methodology of the Salaf (pious predecessors), adopts a literalist approach in interpreting these attributes. They argue that God's informative attributes must be understood in their apparent and literal meanings, while the modality (kayfīyyah) of such attributes should be consigned to God alone. In contrast, the Akhavānul Muslimīn, also asserting adherence to the Salaf, attributes a variety of approaches to the Salaf regarding these attributes. This study, using a descriptive-analytical method, examines the perspectives of both movements and concludes that the claims of both regarding their fidelity to the Salaf are problematic. This is because the Salaf did not hold a uniform view on the matter; in fact, some among them endorsed interpretive readings (ta’wīl) of the attributes.
