The Mechanism of the Prophet’s Infallibility Based on Divine Laws in Sūrah Isrāʾ

Abstract:   (2 Views)
The doctrine of the infallibility (ʿiṣmah) of the prophets—especially that of the Seal of the Prophets, Prophet Mohammad (pbuh)—is one of the central issues in Islamic theology and constitutes a foundational principle in the sciences of Qur’anic exegesis and Hadith. Infallibility forms the cornerstone of the community’s trust in the divine message. The Qur’an explains this essential principle in various ways. Contrary to the view of some Qur’anic researchers, verses 73–77 of Sūrah Isrāʾ do not suggest any deficiency in the Prophet’s infallibility. Rather, they elucidate the mechanism of the Prophet’s infallibility by referring to certain divine laws (sunan ilāhiyyah). This study employs a descriptive–analytical approach based on library research to explain the infallibility of the Prophet (PBUH) through the divine principles mentioned in these verses. According to these verses, God refers to six immutable divine laws: the law of testing human beings through trials and temptations; the law of divine stabilization; the law that, in the absence of divine stabilization, individuals may be affected by trials; the law of proportionality between punishment and crime; the law of having no helper at the time of executing punishment; and finally, the law of the destruction of the enemies of the Messenger following his expulsion. One of the most important outcomes of this study is the clarification of the mechanism of the Prophet’s infallibility. A key element in understanding this mechanism is the exalted objective that the Prophet’s infallibility serves. In order to realize that supreme aim—namely, providing the conditions for the guidance of humanity across different eras—every obstacle must be removed. Although God’s will ultimately prevails and none can oppose it, anyone who, regardless of position, acts against this objective will face a doubled punishment in both this world and the hereafter.
